The CSA (Community Supported Agriculture)
"If the farmers do not plant their crops the people in the city shall surely die of hunger." - African Proverb
CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture, and the name really says it all: Community members buy a share of the season's crop, paying all or part of their share before the growing season begins, then they receive a regular share of the food throughout the season. The system acts as an insurance program of sorts for the farmer, ensuring first that they have the money to get the growing started (meaning buying seeds, tools, equipment, etc.), while giving them the security of knowing they already have buyers, or shareholders, for their crops.
The benefits of participating in a CSA extend further than simply supporting local growers and guaranteeing the customers one steady price per week for produce.
- CSA's ensure consumers get the freshest produce available short of growing it on their own.
- Source Farm is an Organic Farm.
- CSA's mean shorter transportation from farm to city- versus being shipped across the country or the ocean. This means food spends less time on trucks, boats or planes losing nutrients.
- You will know the farmer who grows your food.
- There is more variety of specialty produce.
- It just a much cheaper way to provide fruits and vegetables for your family.
